The Other: An Urban Aboriginal Podcast

Research Start-up Summary and Abstract:

Though it is a relatively new phenomenon podcasting has quickly become a major cultural force (The Economist, 2006). Just see the rise and success of the Serial podcast which David Carr of the New York Times called it the first breakout hit in podcasting (2015). The proliferation of user friendly technology has given podcasting an almost omnipresent presence. However, even though iTunes users listened to over 7 billion podcasts in 2014, a quick search will find a small number dedicated to Indian, Metis, or Inuit issues.

The goal of this project is to establish an urban Aboriginal focused podcast that provides one on one in depth and frank conversations about individuals experience with growing up or becoming an urban Aboriginal. With one podcast uploaded a month, this show would be able to provide 12 original conversations in one year. Also, the podcast would have its own website (hosted by square-space), Facebook page, and YouTube channel in order to have a discussion forum so that the podcast could encourage conservation connections to urban aboriginals across the country.
